How to Build Kitchen Storage Benches

A kitchen storage bench can be useful in a few ways. You may want the extra seating in the kitchen or need a place to store additional items. For instance, you may want to display a collection of cookbooks or certain appliances that you barely use. Building your own kitchen storage bench should take less than a week to accomplish.

Clear the area that you want to build your bench so you can obtain accurate measurements. You can visit your local hardware store for the items you will need.

Materials

  • 2x4 lumber

  • OSB board

  • wood panel board

  • miter saw

  • tape measure

  • four-inch wood screws

  • a power screwdriver

  • hammer

  • inishing nails

  • wood putty

  • sandpaper

  • paint or wood stain

  • paintbrush

  • 3 hinge fixtures

  1. Measure and cut the panel boards. You will need multiple sizes: (2) 2 feet by 16 inches and 16 inches by 6 feet, (2) 16 inches by 6 feet, and one 2x6 foot board. The OSB board needs to be cut into one piece that is 2 feet by 6 feet. With the 2x4 board you will need to cut four, 6-foot pieces and sixteen, 16-inch pieces.

  2. Start forming the interior frame with two of the 6-foot pieces. Lay the boards on the group parallel to each other. Place two of the 16-inch boards perpendicular in between the ends of the 6-feet boards. This should create a rectangular form. Place two more of the 16-inch pieces between the 16-inch pieces in the formation at two feet apart.

  3. Screw the wood screws into the panels at an angle. Lay all of the wood pieces on the floor so that the four inch sides are against the floor facing up, instead of facing to the sides. Repeat this step and step two for the remainder of the 6-feet boards and four of the 16-inch pieces.

  4. Attach the last 16-inch pieces in between the two pieces you formed in steps two and three. Screw the boards at the point at which they are intersecting. This will form a rectangular bench.

  5. Use the panel board to cover the outside of the bench. Attach the panel board to the frame with the finishing nails. Make sure that the panel pieces are completely covering the frame.

  6. Make sure that all screws and nails are deep into the holes. Cover the holes with wood putty and sand the putty smooth. Paint or stain panel pieces and the OSB board. Let the stain or the paint dry overnight.

  7. Place the OSB board on top of the kitchen storage bench. Attach the hinge fixtures to the back of the OSB piece. Make sure that all of the hinge fixtures are equally separated.
