How to Build One-Stall Horse Barns

Almost every girl has the childhood dream of owning her own horse.  Whether you were a lucky guy or girl who was able to have a horse as a child or own one now, the horse must have adequate shelter.  If there is only one horse on the property, a full-sized barn is not necessary to house it; a one-stall horse barn will suffice.

Materials Needed:

  • Eight Four-by-four inch posts

  • Post hole digger

  • Concrete

  • Two-by-four inch lumber for the siding and rafters

  • Sheet metal roofing

  • Lumber nails

  • Roofing Nails

  • Hammer

  • Hinge kit with screws

  • Latch

  • Cordless Drill

  • Level

  1. Plot out where you will build your one-stall horse barn.  The barn must be large enough to comfortably house the horse or two that you own.  A size that can be used is 8-by-14 feet.  This size stall is suitable to house your horses during the night and through bad weather, but they will need a pasture to exercise in also.

  2. Dig post holes every four feet to put the four-by-four inch posts in.  Make the holes for the poles at the back of the stall two feet deeper than the ones in the front.  This will allow for a slanted roof for water to flow off of.  Put the posts in the holes squarely using the level to make sure the posts are straight.  Pack enough dirt around the poles to keep them upright.  Mix the cement and pour it in around the posts to keep them secure.

  3. Choose where the gate will go and make it with two-by-four inch timbers for the gate frame and the door itself.  Mount the gate to a post with the hinges and the latch.

  4. Make horizontal studs around the posts with two-by-four inch timbers.  Then nail additional two-by-four inch timbers vertically, securing them on the studs.

  5. Make a rectangle frame for the roof with two-by-four inch timbers.  Take it to the top of the structure and nail it to the top of the posts to secure it and create a roof.

  6. Nail metal sheeting to the roof frame to complete the roof.
