How to Build RC Model Planes

Most RC airplanes begin life as a kit. The kits come with most, if not all, the supplies a model enthusiast needs to construct an airplane. Aseembling the models can be a window into history, as many models are replicas of past years.

  1. Choose a kit if you are a beginner. You can get kits out of wood, styrene, plastic and foam. Only the most experienced builders should attempt building an RC airplane from scratch. Most beginner kits are constructed from balsa wood. There is a wide variety of skill levels available in kits for hobbyists to progress.

  2. Choose a work surface. Moving your model after starting is very difficult. It's also important that your work surface is level.

  3. Place the plans on the modeling board and cover with a sheet of wax paper. Pin the corners. Alternatively, pin the plans to a surface near you for easy reference. Look at the parts to your airplane. There should be a few spare parts to allow for error.

  4. Follow the instructions and build the frame for the model. It is important to follow the sometimes elaborate instructions carefully. The smallest misstep in assembly can cause a crash in flight. The kits come complete for non-flight modeling, rubberband flight or radio-controlled flight. Planes from kits can usually be converted to gas or electric-powered flight with the addition of several components.

  5. Cover the plane with several layers or "plane dope." This is a thin protective layer that seals the plane.
