How to Build Solar Refrigeration
Solar refrigeration systems use both heat and energy from the sun to create a cooling environment. These systems use energy exchanges that occur from compounds that turn liquid form into a vapor. Solar refrigeration doesn't require any electricity, dangerous refrigerants or Freon, making them a perfect companion to a green lifestyle.
What You'll Need:
- Sand
- Washcloth
- Watering can
- Two large earthenware flowerpots (one slightly smaller than the other)
- Examine each flowerpot to ensure neither contains any holes or other gaps. Take the larger flowerpot and fill it with a layer of sand.
- Put the smaller pot on the inside of the larger pot and ensure that the two are at the same level.
- Place sand in the remaining open area between the pots.
- Next, pour water in to the sand until it is saturated completely. When the water begins to stand instead of penetrate the sand, you can stop pouring.
- Any items that you want to keep refrigerated within the unit should be placed within the smaller pot.
- Slightly dampen your washcloth and place it atop both of the pots until they are completely covered.
- You'll need to refill the sand with water one to two times a day. Place your system in a cool and dry place with excellent ventilation.
