How to Build a 3-Car Garage With Storage

One of the biggest concerns when purchasing or remodeling a home is storage space. A three car garage can solve this issue by providing space for vechicles, tools and outdoor toys in the stall areas. Additional storage space above the garage can be utilized for items that are not frequently used or needed.

  1. Determine the dimensions. Take into consideration not only the number of vehicles that will occupy the garage, but also other items that will be housed there. Workbenches, cabinets, lawn mowers and any other items of considerable size can quickly fill up a garage.

  2. Figure out the number and size of garage doors. These come in a variety of sizes with varying heights and widths to accommodate different vehicle types. Entry doors and windows should also be considered at this point.

  3. Search for construction plans if you plan to build the garage yourself. Numerous plans can be found in books, at your local home improvement center and online. Many major home improvement locations have programs that will allow you to customize a garage, calculate a price and purchase all the materials in one visit.

  4. Obtain bids from multiple builders if you choose to hire out the job. Be specific about your building plans and the timeframe in which you would like it completed.

  5. Contact local authorities and obtain building permits. Even small construction projects completed by homeowners require permits. Do your research and make sure all required permits have been obtained.

  6.  Purchase materials. This includes ordering concrete needed for flooring and footings. Allow adequate time for delivery of all materials.

  7. Begin building the garage of your dreams.
