How to Choose a Car Hauler

How to Build a Car Hauler Ramp Truck

You cannot just haul cars on an existing heavy-duty trailer. These trailers need to be modified so they can safely transport multiple vehicles at a time. This project will be very difficult. Make sure you consult with and have someone with a lot of knowledge about fabrication help before you attempt this.

Things You'll Need:

  • Semi Truck

  • Welder

  • Steel

  • Wheels

  • Axles

  • Chains

  • Ropes

  1. Find a quality used semi truck. You might want to talk with the closest trucking company to see if they know anyone who is selling used semi trucks. The key is finding one that has enough power to haul several cars at once. You could get away with just a large pickup truck if you only plan on transporting one vehicle at a time.

  2. Make sure the truck bed is long enough to haul the amount of vehicles you want to. You might need to extend the bed or make multiple rows stacked on top of each other. You'll need a quality welder and steel to build the extensions.

  3. Add extra wheels and axles to the truck bed for more support. The added weight will be a big burden on the existing axles. Consider replacing the old wheels and axles if they look worn out.

  4. Add steel tabs to the truck bed so chains and ropes can attach to them. You'll secure the vehicles to the truck bed with the chains and ropes.

  5. Test the trailer by hauling a couple vehicles a short distance. Try finding a couple old vehicles at a junkyard to perform the test. You certainly wouldn’t want to test your trailer with newer vehicles just in case something went wrong.
