How to Build a Clothing Drying Rack

Many people choose to use clothing drying racks over modern dryers in order to save money on their electric bill and to reduce their personal impact on the environment. Building a clothing drying rack is a fairly simple project that can be undertaken by the average homeowner.

  1. Obtain the tools and materials needed to build a clothing drying rack. As for the wood you will need eight pieces of wood that are 20 inches long, four pieces of wood that 35 inches long, and four pieces of wood that are 28 inches long. The lengths of wood should be roughly one-by-two inches in diameter. You will also need a package of wood screws and a drill.

  2. Use sandpaper or a plane to work off the edges each piece of wood until they are rounded and smooth. You should also ensure that there is as little roughness and splinters on the sides of the wood, as they will cause clothing to catch and possibly even rip on the rack.

  3. Cut two small holes in each of the eight pieces of wood that are 20 inches in length. The holes will be at one-and-a-half inches and at 18 inches.

  4. Cut three small holes in the pieces that are 35 inches long. The holes should be at 16 inches, 24 inches, and 34 inches.

  5. Cut four small holes in the 28-inch pieces of wood. The holes are to be drilled at 2 inches, 10 inches, and 20 inches.

  6. Fit the four 35-inch and four 28-inch pieces of wood together to make the sides of the rack. The 35-inch pieces angle slightly inward as they travel up and the 28-inch pieces criss-cross to connect them. Use wood screws to fasten the boards together.

  7. Use the eight 20-inch pieces of wood to connect the sides of the drying rack. They fit into the holes that remain after your have fastened the large pieces together. Use wood screws to attach these pieces as well.
