How to Build a Computer Service Center

Part time or home-based businesses tend to flourish in times of economic recession.  If you are tech savvy, a desktop and laptop computer repair business may be just the thing to bring in some extra money.  Even the most expensive computer systems can fall victim to viruses, spyware, and hardware malfunction.

If you are able to address these problems at a reasonable price, you can turn a hobby into a part time income stream.

  1. Ensure that you have sufficient outlets when you begin planning out your space.  If you are setting up a workspace in your home, you may need to install one or two additional outlets on a separate circuit.  In order to achieve maximum efficiency, you will want to have outlets positioned on each wall.

  2. Connect a UPS into each outlet on each wall.  When selecting your UPS units, ensure you choose ones with long battery life as well as surge protection.

  3. Setup long tables so that you can maximize workspace.  Position the tables along the walls and ensure that you leave a gap between the table and the wall in order to allow for space for power cords and network cables.  The tables should be long, but also sturdy enough to be able to hold three or four computers at one time.

  4. Purchase a variety of external hard drives, jump drives, and other portable storage devices.  Storage devices are necessary in order to backup customer data before beginning virus removal or other repair work.

  5. Ensure that your workspace has high-speed Internet capability.  Often virus removal and repair requires Internet access to download removal tools as well as patches.  It is also helpful to test Internet capability once repairs have been completed.

  6. Begin advertising.  Any business requires customers, and customers have to know that you are open for business.  There may be a strong need for the services that you provide, but potential customers need to know that you are able to meet their computer repair needs.  Try networking with small businesses, or inquire about teaching a basic computer course at a local community college.
