How to Build a Deck Covering

A deck is a perfect place to bask in the morning, watch the stars in the evening, or entertain houseguests. When it gets too hot during the day making it unbearable for you to enjoy some time, it is advisable to cover the deck.  This also protects it from excess heat that can be reflected into your home that can ruin the surfaces deck finish.

Tools:

  • 10 foot posts

  • Drill

  • Screws

  • Level

  • Rafter Hangers

  • Boards and Lumber

  • Awning Fabric

  • Sewing Supplies

  1. Replace the old posts one at a time while detaching you current cover if any. Use the old posts as templates to match while drilling for the new notch and lag bolts.

  2. Using the markings, drill two bolt holes on each post that are at least 4-inches apart. Use the bolts to secure the framing and test for any loose bolts.

  3. Make sure you check the level of each post during installation to ensure a straight and square fit.

  4. Create a 2-inch by 6-inch mounting using horizontal boards that run against your exterior house wall that match the width of the deck that will overhang the deck edge. Make sure they are 8-feet above the decks surface then mount them into the house framework using 4-inch screws.

  5. Mount rafter hangers perpendicularly to the new deck posts ensuring that each post has two hangers that are 4-inches apart. This is to mount the cross bards so ensure that the boars extend with 1-foot beyond the deck post. This allows for any decorative cutting.

  6. Mount a supporting board for the cross boards measuring 6 by 2-inches across the outside of the end posts.

  7. Use the deck screws to install the cross boards on either side of the posts by hanging one side on the hanger and resting the other on the post.

  8. After bolting the cross boards on the posts measure the outdoor fabric to about 18-inces and if you want a decorative finish add 12-inches.

  9.  Cut and sew the fabric as desired while creating rod allowance, then fasten it on bamboo rods with two rings per rod.
