How to Build a Desk in a Bay Window
Bay windows are a beautiful addition to any home. Often these windows are in a dining room or a bedroom. A majority of the time, the area under a bay window is left as empty unused floor space which could be the perfect area for a customized desk.
Items You May Need:
- 2 Pieces of Plywood
- 10 feet of two-by-four
- Saw
- Nails
- Hammer
- Electric Screwdriver
- Wood Screws
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Measuring Tape
- Cabinets
- Braces
- Caulk.
- Paint,
- paint
- Use the tape measure to verify the size of each section of the bay window.
Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of the window. Use this measurement to decide the height of the desktop.
Measure the width of the desk side to side.
Cut the two-by-four to make the sides of your bay window.
Cut the plywood to match the length of the window, and to the correct depth for the bay window's desk.
Trim the edges of the plywood, making sure it fits snugly in the existing trim.
Drill two pilot holes through the center of each piece of plywood.
Drill pilot holes in the wall at the studs for strength.
Attach the pieces of plywood to the wall at the studs with wood screws.
Repeat with each piece cut for both sides of the bay window.
Place center braces, if needed, for extra support.
Cut a two-by-four to match the width of the bay window from wall to wall in the front as well as the back.
Trim sides of the plywood to match the angles of the wall.
Set the large piece of material on the braces attached to the wall, then place the desktop by centering it over the braces.
Nail the desktop in place.
Glide the cabinet unit in place under the desk's top.
Position the cabinet and desk together.
Fill all gaps and spaces with caulk.
