How to Build a Dog Pen
Taking care of pets involves not only feeding and watering them while loving them to pieces, it also means that you have to provide a good safe place for them to run around outside while you are not at home, or to have time to do their business.
Things You'll Need:
- Hardware and chain link fencing
- Roofing material if desired
- Floor materials
- Select the place in your yard that you want the dog pen to set. It can be attached to the house with access through a doggie door or free standing in somewhere else. It should be easy to access.
- Choose chain link fencing at the height you need. This can be four to six feet or taller according to what you prefer.
- Decide whether you want to put a cover over the top of the fence using shade cloth or other structural materials. It is a good idea to have shade for pets, particularly in hot climates when they will be in the pen for lengths of time.
- You could purchase a kit for a dog pen at local retail home improvement stores, and erect it from instructions supplied, or build one from scratch using chain link fencing and posts. It is simple to dig holes for posts and set them with concrete mix, then stretch the chain link mesh between the posts attaching with brackets and bolts. Either way, you will have a good way to contain your pets for their protection and yours.
- Add a gate for easy access for cleaning or retrieving shy pets.
- Place the dog pen on bare ground if you do not have a digger, or you can place it on a concrete slab or pavers. You can also build a wooden floor to place it on. Be sure that you take into consideration cleaning regardless what material you choose.
