How to Build a Fairy Garden House

Every garden benefits from a touch of whimsy. A fun and easy project for bringing it to your garden is building a fairy garden house. With a few inexpensive materials, you can create a decoration for your garden that looks as if it were built by the fair folk themselves.

What You Will Need

  • An unfinished, wooden bird house.

  • Primer paint.

  • Outdoor latex paint.

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks or weather-resistant epoxy.

  • Small stones.

  • Dried moss or grass.

  • Pieces of bark.

  • Sticks.

  • Shells.

  • Any other natural materials you want to use.

  • Clear acrylic sealer spray.

  1. Paint your birdhouse with the primer.

  2. Allow the primer to dry completely before continuing.

  3. Paint your birdhouse with the outdoor paint. Choose any color you desire, keeping in mind that a neutral color such as gray, brown or tan will look more natural while a bold color such red, purple or yellow will add eccentricity to your garden.

  4. Allow the paint to dry completely. Apply one to three coats, depending upon the thickness of the paint.

  5. Glue your natural elements to your house where normal house trim would be found. Some design ideas include: sticks or stones around windows and doorways, shells or pieces of bark as roof shingles window shutters, and dried moss on the walls to look like ivy growing up the house. The complexity of the design and the materials used are up to you.

  6. Allow the glue to dry completely.

  7. Spray the entire fairy garden house with the clear acrylic sealer spray.

  8. Let the sealer dry completely before handling.
