How to Build a Gate for a Privacy Fence
If you have small children in your house, a privacy fence would be a great addition. If your fence goes from one side of your house to the other in the backyard, you will want to install a gate. This way you will have access to the backyard without having to go through the house.
How to Build a Gate for a Privacy Fence
Step 1. Where your new gate will be, measure the distance between the two posts. Subtract one inch from that measurement, then cut the 2 X 4 X 96-inch treated lumber to that length.
Step 2. Put the two 2 x 4's right next to each other. Measure and mark the center, then draw a line across each post by placing the framing square on the mark.
Step 3. From the center mark, measure 2 3/4 inches and make a mark. Place the framing square on those marks and a line across both of the posts. This will be the center of the gate and is the starting point to secure the pickets.
Step 4. Place the posts exactly 53 inches apart. Place the first picket between the lines that you drew in step 3. Secure it with some deck screws.
Step 5. Repeat step 4 for the remaining pickets. In order to keep the gate balanced, you will have to rip the pickets that go on the ends. Turn the gate over and measure from the top right hand corner of the posts crossways to the bottom left hand corner of the bottom post.
Step 6. Add four inches to this measurement and cut the remaining 2 x 4's to that length. To determine the angle needed to fit it between the top and bottom, place it from corner to corner. Cut it and secure it with the deck screws, When completed it will form a "Z."
