How to Build a Helix for Model Trains

A model train helix is a round tower track that the train climbs around in a circular motion. The helix can be short or tall depending on the model builders needs. The length of the train will determine the diameter needed for building the helix.

Items Needed:

  • Plywood

  • Nails

  • Pencil

  • String

  • Yard stick

  • Drywall square

  • Circular Saw

  • Joiner

  1. Determine the size of the helix you want to build. A large helix will require heavy construction and a strong foundation.

  2. Acquire a bench that will be able to support the weight of the complete construction. A strong workbench is required. Some tracks weigh several hundred pounds and they can reach heights of five feet.

  3. Purchase half-inch AC grade plywood for the base.

  4. Lay out the curves using string or a yardstick. Draw a line lengthwise down the center of the plywood.

  5. Establish where the center of the arc is by measuring the radius of the plywood and mark it using the pencil.

  6. Create curves using a drywall square. Use the center point to get curves of 48-inch radius.

  7. Draw a line from the outer to the inner radii to mark the ends of each arc at the sides of the plywood.

  8. Make as many arcs as you need to build the helix. Cut the curve from the inner to the outer circumference using a saw.

  9. Join the arcs together to make the helix. Make sure that the joints are level and avoid any kinks that can affect the smooth area for laying the track. Use a joiner to create solid joints. As you build the helix, each level should line up directly above the previous level.

  10. Create spacer blocks and insert them as often as is necessary. Place the spacers under the sub roadbed, and leave space between them to enable you reach into the helix if necessary.
