How to Build a Home Office Desk
People who work at home often need to convert a corner of the house into a home office. A home office desk is small, but it must be sturdy to support heavy computer equipment. A common solution to this problem is to include a vertical piece on the rear of the desk to provide additional reinforcement.
Things You'll Need:
- 1 2-by-5-foot board
- 1 1-by-5 foot board
- 2 2-by-2 1/2-foot boards
- Drill and bit set
- 1/8-inch wood screws
- Select the boards for the home office desk. They will typically be solid wood or particleboard with a thickness of half an inch. The surfaces should be extremely smooth, without any splinters.
- Drill a one-eight-inch hole that is one-eighth of an inch from one of the corners of the 2-by-5-foot board. Repeat this step for the other three corners of the board.
- Drill a one-eight-inch hole in the middle of the short end of the 2-by-5-foot board. It should be one-eighth inch from the edge of the board.
- Drill one-eight-inch holes along one of the long edges of the 2-by-5-foot board at 1-foot intervals.
- Place one of the 2-by-2 1/2 foot boards under a short edge of the 2-by-5-foot board so the boards form a right angle. Fasten the two boards together with one-eight-inch wood screws through each of the three holes along the short edge of the 2-by-5-foot board. Repeat this step to attach the other 2-by-2 1/2-foot board to the other short end of the 2-by-5-foot board.
- Fasten the 1-by-5-foot board to the edge of the long edge of the 2-by-5 foot board using the holes drilled in step four.
