How to Install Light Garden

How to Build a Light Garden Gate

A garden generally needs a fence to prevent children and pets from damaging the plants. The gate for this fence can be lightweight because it generally does not need to keep out large animals. You can construct a light garden fence from wire mesh such as chicken wire.

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape

  • Saw

  • Two-by-two boards

  • Two-by-four board

  • Hammer

  • Nails

  • Chicken wire

  • Wire cutters

  • Hinges

  1. Cut two two-by-two boards equal to the height of the gate and two two-by-two boards equal to the width of the gate. Nail these four boards together to create the gate's frame.

  2. Place the frame of the gate on a flat work surface, and cut out a section of chicken wire the size of the frame. Staple the chicken wire to the frame with a staple gun. Trim the chicken wire with wire cutters.

  3. Attach the hinges to the gate's frame with the wood screws that came with the hinges. Install the gate into the fence opening, and attach the free end of the hinges to a fence post.

  4. Attach the latch for the gate onto the fence post, and attach the latch post to the gate.

  5. Install a sill below the gate to prevent small animals from burrowing under the gate. Dig a trench under the gate that is 2 inches wide and 4 inches deep. Place a two-by-four into the trench so that 2 inches of the plank protrudes above the ground. Pack the dirt around the plank to hold it in place.
