Building patios on uneven ground is actually quite common. It may sound like a difficult task, but in reality it's relatively easy to overcome. Making sure your patio's base is properly measured will ensure you have an even and beautiful patio finish. These steps will help you though the process of building a patio on uneven ground.

Digging spring soil with shovel

1. Mark the desired dimensions you wish your patio to be using garden stakes. Once you have an outline of your patio's location, tie a visible string between each stake. This will give you the shape needed for your patio.

2. Use a shovel to dig out a trench around where you have marked off your patio's dimensions. Dig the trench about six or seven inches deep to make sure you have enough room to pour the gravel and sand.

3. Use a hose or buckets of water to soak the soil down inside the trench. Make sure not to flood the area; if this happens you will to wait for the water to soak through.

4. Take a shovel and pat down the soaked soil making it hard and smooth.

5. Pour rough edged gravel into the hole to a depth of about four inches. Use a gravel compactor to make sure the gravel is flush and compact into the area.

Raking Over Soil

6.  Pour sand on top of the gravel. The sand should be about two to three inches deep. Because the ground is uneven you may need to pour a little less sand in the side with the higher elevation.

7.  Using a rake or the shovel, smooth out and pat down the area making the entire area even. Now you have an even foundation base for your patio that is on uneven ground.
