How to Build a Picket Fence
Many people think that picket fences are stylish, which is the main reason that the fences are so popular. Picket fences not only beautify the landscape of a home, but they are also a form of security. Building a picket fence is fairly easy to do with some guidance.
How to Build a Picket Fence
Place temporary stakes at all corners to outline the plot for the fence.
Stretch strings between the stakes, making sure that the lines are tightly secured to each stake. The string is used as a guide for setting the posts.
Mark the locations for the posts with spray paint. The posts should be spaced approximately 6 to 8 feet apart.
Use a posthole digger to dig postholes at each of the locations that you marked with paint. Each hole should be approximately 2 feet deep.
Put approximately 3" of gravel in the bottom of each hole.
Place a post in each hole, and fill the hole with quick drying cement. Use a stake to brace the pole while the cement sets.
After the cement has set, nail the top and bottom railings of the fence to the posts.
Determine the number of pickets that you will need, and nail them to the railings.
The fence is now ready to be painted, if desired.
