How to Build a Porch Column
A porch column gives an elegant look to a home and also increases the curb appeal. They come in a variety of widths and styles. Building one is a challenge, but it can be achieved by following a few detailed steps.
- Take proper measurements. Measure the area from the porch and the covering where you will be installing your column. Deduct 4 inches from the length and mark one of the 1 by 8 inch pieces of lumber and set it aside. Place a carpenter's square on the spot that you marked, trace a line over it and cut the board. Continue this process for the remaining lumber. Next, drill pilot holes along one edge of each of the four pieces. Make sure to space the holes about 5 inches apart from each other.
- Put your lumber on a level working space. Take one of the pieces of lumber that you cut and place it on a flat surface. Position the other three pieces of lumber on top of the three pieces that are 2 by 6¾ by 6¾ inches. Place one at both ends and the last one in the center.
- Drill additional holes. Drill pilot holes through the 1 by 8 inch lumber as well as the three 2 by 6¾ by 6¾ inch lumber. Drill two holes on each side of each block of lumber. Next, hammer nails into the holes and fasten them to the columns.
- Place glue inside the block of holes. Apply a thin bead of wood glue inside the square of the block with pilot holes and secure it to the other end of the column with finishing nails. Remove any extra glue off quickly so that it does not set in. You are now ready to install the column. Wedge it in securely through the block that you attached earlier.
