How to Form a Dormer Window

How to Build a Roof Dormer

A roof dormer is often used on slanted roofs in order to accommodate chimneys or windows for a home. One of the most popular styles of roof dormers is the hipped style which has three sloped panels that join at the top of the roof.

Materials needed:

  • Saw

  • Plaster

  • Stud beams

  • Dormer materials

  • Felt paper

  • Shingles

  • Roof sealant

  • Drywall

  • Insulation

  • Window and frame

  • Sketch the design for the dormer. Make sure that it is aesthetically pleasing and also has a stable structure. It also needs to mesh well with the building.

  • Remove the shingles from the roof. Remove gutters and any other fixtures that are located where the dormer will go.

  • Frame the wall. This is necessary if a window will be installed. The interior wall needs to be built so that it meets the window level. Extra stud beams may need to be added to support the frame.

  • Build the dormer. Follow the sketch that was drawn up. Make sure that siding for the dormer matches the rest of the home. If a window was framed, it needs to be installed at this time.

  • Build a roof for the dormer. Place the felt paper down and lay the shingles over it. Replace roofing to the surrounding area that was previously removed. Apply roof sealant next to protect from inclement weather.

  • Add drywall to the interior. Place it around the dormer and window. Add insulation to the additional wall space that was created for the window.
