How to Build a Roof

Hiring a contractor to build a new roof is quite costly. With roofing, however, you do have other options. This depends in small part on your comfort levels with standing on your roof. If you are comfortable, building your own roof will save you a considerable amount of money.

How to Build a Roof:

Step 1: Measure the dimensions of your house. Cut your main frame pieces based on these measurements. Begin assembling these main pieces. Add the additional rafters to this frame.

Step 2: Add braces between and perpendicular to your rafters keeping them evenly spaced and squared.

Step 3: Cover the completed rafters with plywood covered with tar paper. Draw a parallel line on this tar paper to prepare for the placement of your shingles.

Step 4: Nail shingles into place with roofing nails. Start at the bottom row then work your way to the peak of the roof. You should attach these shingles working across the roof constructing rows. Allow the bottom shingles to overlap the roof by at least 3/4 inches.
