How to Build a Room For Kiln Dried Lumber

Kiln-dried lumber can be very expensive. In order to maintain the quality, you must store it in a temperature controlled environment. This will prevent the wood from absorbing moisture. Previous woodworking experience is recommended in converting or building a kiln-dried lumber storage room.

The local hardware store will have all of the supplies that you need to successfully build the room. The supplies you will need are: nails, a hammer, dry wall, 2x4 lumber, an electric screw gun, pre-hung door, outlets, light fixtures, a unit heater, hygrostat, lumber racks, and a dehumidifier.

1. Choose your location where you want to build the storage room. You may need to build one or two walls in order to enclose the room. Leave an opening for the pre-hung door.

2. Start hanging the drywall on the stud walls with the electric screw gun and the drywall screws. Attach the drywall on the outside faces of the wall, making sure to leave the studs on the interior of the room where the lumber rack can hang.

3. Hammer the pins out of the hinges of the door jam. Attach the jam into the opening on the wall by hammering, and re-hang the door in the jam.

4. Consult with an electrician. You will need to have the outlets and lighting fixture wired in the lumber room. The electrician will also need to install a unit heather and hygrostat so the heater can start and stop when it reaches the proper temperature and humidity level.

5. Plug the dehumidifier in the room and set it to the maximum level you want the humidity level to reach before it automatically stops.

6. Stack the lumber in piles on the floor and also along the walls on lumber racks.
