How to Build a Storage Shelf

Building your own storage shelf is a much more affordable approach at organizing all of your belongings. While purchasing and installing storage shelves can be somewhat expensive, building the shelves and installing them yourself can save you quite a bit of money.

  1. Measure the amount of space you have available for your storage shelves. The measurements must be accurate and are very important. The reason measurements are so important is because you need to know exactly how much space you have available when inserting the shelf.

  2. Purchase the material you will need to put your shelves together. Plywood is a good type of wood to be used for storage shelves. You can purchase plywood at various home improvement stores. You will also need screws and other materials. You may want to use pipe for the legs of the storage shelf.

  3. Devise a plan for your storage shelves. You may have a specific idea in mind of what you want your shelves to look like. Put thought into it before cutting up your plywood.

  4. Make sketches of your shelves. If you do have an idea or plan for your shelves, you should always sketch it out on paper as a rough draft.

  5. Cut the pieces of you plywood to fit the exact measurements that you will need.

  6. Cut your pipe material that you are using as the legs for the storage shelf.

  7. Measure the area of the pipe or other material so that you know how big of a hole you will need to make on your plywood.

  8. Cut the holes into your plywood as needed and insert the pipe or material into the holes that you have made. The pipe should fit snug inside of the plywood.

  9. Cut any excess wood that you do not need off of your plywood and insert your shelves. You may want to hang your storage shelf on the wall or you may be interested in making it a rolling shelf. Whichever you decide, you will save money doing it yourself.
