How to Build a Wooden Deck Bench
A deck is an outdoor floor made of wood that is attached to a building. Homeowners frequently build benches on their decks to encourage people to use the deck. Building your own wooden deck bench can dramatically reduce its cost.
Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Two-by-four boards
- Circular saw
- Drill and bit set
- Four-by-four boards
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Decking screws
- Cut 10 two-by-four boards to a length of 21 inches with a circular saw. Drill two holes at both ends of the boards by using the largest drill bit that is smaller than your decking screws. These boards will be the arms and supporting members of your bench.
- Cut four four-by-four boards to a length of 24 inches with a circular saw. These boards will be the legs of your bench.
- Cut 5 two-by-four boards to a length of 36 inches with a circular saw. Drill two holes at both ends of the boards by using the largest drill bit that is smaller than your decking screws. These boards will be the seat for your bench.
- Position one arm and one leg of the bench at right angles so that the holes in the arm are above the leg. Fasten deck screws through the holes in the arm to attach it to the leg of the bench. Fasten a leg to the other end of the arm in a similar manner. Repeat this procedure with the other arm of the bench and the other pair of legs. This will produce two frames for the bench, each consisting of an arm and two legs.
- Attach four two-by-four boards across the legs of each of the two frames for the bench by using the decking screws.
- Connect the two frames of the bench with two-by-four boards 3 feet long. These boards will form the seat of the bench and should have a height of about 16 inches.
