How to Build an Entrance Door Jamb

The door jamb is the wooden frame that surrounds a door on the edges and the inside frame which connects the door to the building. These frames range in size, color and material but are installed in the same manner. A level, hammer, nails and a tape measure are the tools needed for the job.

  1. Measure the entrance door area. Include the width, height and depth. Double check the measurements are accurate, as one small measuring error can keep the door jamb from being installed properly.

  2. Take the measurements to the local lumber or hardware store. Let someone know about building an entrance door jamb, and they can help to get the proper wood and cut it. If the store cuts the wood, there may be a small fee per cut.

  3. Measure the hinges on the door and mark the area on the wood. Cut out this area with a router. With the measurements for the hinges, go to the hardware store and an associate may be able to use a router for the hinges.

  4. Mark the three sections on the door frame where the door stop will be installed.

  5. Apply glue to the center section and put it in place. Use the level before securing the piece with nails.

  6. Cut 45 degree angles on the other two pieces at the top and bottom, where the boards meet. This will make the door jamb look professional. Add two additional pieces to this part, again making sure they are level and then securing with nails.

  7. Hang the door on the hinges and tap the pin into place.

  8. Add door locks and a handle to complete the door in the jamb.
