How to Build an MTB Ramp
Mountain trail bikes have become quite the rage. It is an invigorating sport and if you are also jumping, it can be really challenging as well. Building an MTB ramp isn’t difficult, you just want to make certain that you cover all your bases prior to making that first jump.
Items you will require:
- Water source
- Shovel
- Compacting plate
- Choose where you are going to put the ramp. Make certain you have permission from the property owners before beginning.
- Pick an area where you can have a straight shot prior to the ramp to build up speed for jumping and a nice landing area behind the jump.
- Begin shoveling a hole and place the dirt right next to the hole. This is the dirt you will be using for your ramp.
- Start with an incline of 20 to 30 degrees if you are just a beginner for safety. As you increase in confidence you can always increase the incline for bigger and better jumps.
- Use the water to wet down the dirt and using the plate compactor stamp down the dirt to harden the ramp. Permit the dirt to completely dry and test walk the ramp for sturdiness and soft spots. If you find any soft spots re-water and compact again. Test and re-wet or add dirt as needed until you have it where you want it.
- Test the ramp once it is completed and dried out with your bike. Go slow until you know it is hard and will take both you and the bike. Look it over for possible hazards prior to making any full speed jumps.
