How to Rent RV Storage

How to Build an RV Storage Unit

To keep an RV safe from the elements when not in use, an RV storage unit will do the job; it is a kind of unit similar to an enlarged car port. So if enough room is available to keep the RV in the driveway, construct a unit first.

Supplies:

  • Saw

  • Power drill and screws

  • Tarp

  • Metal or wood siding

  • Door handle

  • Latch assembly

  • Measuring tools

  • 2X4 lumber

  • Hammer and nails

  1. Take measurements of the length, width and height of the RV. Factor in objects attached to the sides, roof, or rear of the vehicles. The unit has to be at least two feet longer and higher than the vehicles. The unit also must be four feet wider. A normal RV storage unit is 14 feet wide and 40 feet long.

  2. Pick where the unit will be on the property. Enough square footage is needed for the unit itself. But there also must be enough room to drive in and out of the unit.

  3. Build the frame of the unit with the proper height, length and width. Get four pieces of 2x4 lumber for length and height. For the width, find at least two pieces of 2x4 lumber. Cut diagonal joists and nail them in all the frame’s top corners.

  4. Cover up the top of the frame with a tarp or a similar material. Screw or nail the tarp on the frame’s top edges. This creates a canopy style of unit.

  5. Add the roof and sides to the form if a manager style unit is preferred. Use cold formed steel or aluminum siding to create the sides.

  6. Put a door in the front for a fully enclosed unit. Use a sheet of wood the same height and width of the unit. Fasten the wood to the unit with hinges and put on a handle and latch.
