How to Burn Green Grass
When cutting your lawn, you have a few choices of what to do with the clippings. You can bag them, but this can be quite a chore. You can also use clippings as fertilizer. However, you may never have considered the option of burning green grass.
Items you'll need:
- Matches
- Lighter fluid
- Metal trash barrel or fire pit
- Wood or other kindling
- Fire extinguisher or hose
Step 1: Contact your local fire department and inquire about regulations dealing with the burning of yard clippings. Some cities or counties may not allow it, or may have specific laws regulating how it is accomplished. Follow all applicable laws.
Step 2: Mow your grass, and as the grass catcher of your lawnmower fills, unload the green grass clippings near the area that you will do the burning. Do not put clippings in the barrel or pit yet.
Step 3: Stack your wood or other kindling in the barrel or fire pit. Make sure that your fire extinguisher or hose is nearby in case of any problems. Using the matches and lighter fluid, start a fire.
Step 4: Put small batches of green grass into the fire. Do not put in too much at one time. When grass is green, it still contains a lot of water. Putting too much grass in the fire at one time could extinguish the fire.
Step 5: Once all of the grass has been burned, make sure that the fire is properly extinguished. Pour water or sand on the fire, stir the embers and pour more water or sand to ensure the fire is completely out.
