How to Buy Antiques and Collectibles
Buying antiques and collectibles can sometimes be an art form. You never know where they will turn up, so you always have to be ready to negotiate a deal. When you buy antiques and collectibles, you have to determine whether you're buying for your own personal collection, to give as gifts, or to re-sell. These factors will play a role in your purchases.
Negotiate a deal. Don't ever feel that the prices on antiques and collectibles are set in stone. They are usually not. When you buy antiques and collectibles at shows or fairs, prices are generally negotiable, but some sellers might be insulted at an offer that is too low. Many of these sellers are selling their own personal items which are attached with sentimental value, and consequently, price them a bit higher. You might ask the seller if they are open to negotiations, and if they are firm on their pricing you can either buy the item, or move on to another seller.
Don't overpay. If you are a "newbie" when it comes to buying antiques and collectibles, take someone along with you who knows something about them. You don't want to overpay for an item that you like, so by asking an experienced friend to tag along, you're less likely to do so.
Visit a dealer. If you are just starting out buying antiques and collectibles, it might behoove you to visit an established antiques dealer to make your purchases. Antiques and collectibles dealers who have been in business for a long time, typically charge a fair price and their merchandise is generally of high quality.
