How to Choose Athletic Shoes

How to Buy Athletic Shoes

When it comes to athletic footwear, the choices that you have are abundant. Depending on the sport, new designs come out on almost a monthly basis, as is the case for basketball. If you are looking for longevity, it is recommended that you wear your athletic shoes strictly for the sport you are participating in and wear another pair of shoes for everyday wear.

  • Get your feet measured. The salesperson at the athletic store will be able to measure your feet to get the accurate size. They well be able to give you additional information as far as what brands of shoes tend to run larger, smaller or true-to-size. If you have any unique foot issues such as high arch or flat feet, they can also recommend the best athletic shoes for your particular foot type.

  • Go for a heavy-duty style. If you are playing an aggressive sport such as football or rugby, then you need to purchase a heavy-duty durable shoe. Lighter shoes are for track, tennis and long distance running.

  • Consider the position that you are playing. Take note of this when choosing the type of athletic footwear you need. For instance, a wide receiver on the football team would need a lighter shoe than the defensive tackle.

  • Don't make shoes play dual roles. If you are involved in more than one activity, then get shoes for each one. For example, running shoes are much more flexible than walking shoes, so if you are involved in both walking and running activities, then you will need one lightweight shoe for running and a stiffer shoe for walking.
