How to Buy Baby Accessories Without Knowing the Baby's Gender

While most people want to know the gender of their baby, not knowing may add an element of surprise. You may think that preparing for your baby or wanting to welcome another couple’s baby into the world with a gift would be difficult to do with this unknown factor, but there are many gender neutral baby accessories. Here are some ways to choose a gift that would make any baby happy.

  1. Look for clothing or decorations that are yellow or orange. Pink is usually reserved for girls, and blue for boys. Intermediate colors can go either way, although there is nothing truly wrong with a boy wearing pink or a girl wearing blue.

  2. Find baby’s first books. These are normally made of soft material or very thick cardboard and many have no gender identity attached to them. Books are always a great and thoughtful gift, allowing the parents to interact with their babies.

  3. Search for toys that have patterns like polka dots, zigzags, or all colors on them. Lines and dots aren’t reserved for one sex, and if all colors are on the toy, it won’t be apparent if it is for a boy or girl. Bounce swings, activity mats and walkers are sometimes themed with neutral colors or have animal themes that can be for either sex.

  4. Purchase strollers, high chairs and car seats that are in shades of grey, brown, or black. Most of these accessories come in these colors anyway, being manufactured as a product for both baby boys and girls.

  5. Go with a traditional teddy bear. Lots of children have a stuffed animal growing up, and a teddy bear can provide a boy or girl with much comfort for many years.

  6. Give a gift of baby diapers, baby food, or bath supplies if you are gifting for a friend and don’t know what gender neutral accessory to get them. All babies are going to poop, eat and need to be bathed regardless if they are a boy or girl!
