How to Buy Bulk Food and Save Money
Many people choose to buy food in bulk in order to save money. This practice is particularly common in households that include large numbers of people, but this method of grocery shopping can also benefit those who are purchasing food just for themselves as well.
- Decide on which foods that you can benefit from purchasing in bulk. This is a very important part of the process, as buying more perishable goods than you can use will result in a lot of waste due to spoilage. Good choices for bulk purchases include nonperishable foods, such as canned foods and most grains. These foods can be stored in cabinets or on shelves for very long periods of time. Other good choices include quickly-consumed perishable foods and frozen foods, both of which depend upon storage space.
- Make a shopping list. Use your choices from the previous steps to develop a complete bulk food shopping list before you begin purchasing any items.
- Search for the foods on your shopping list in advertisements from local grocery stores, bulk food stores, and online grocery stores.
- Consider unit prices. Many people make the mistake of thinking that all foods are cheaper when bought in bulk. You can avoid this error by comparing the unit prices of the bulk foods on your list with the unit prices of the same foods in smaller volumes.
- Make as few trips to the grocery store as possible. This is done by purchasing large amounts of the food on your shopping list during each shopping trip. This will prevent you from burning extra fuel in your vehicle and will also reduce the chances of unnecessary expense due to making impulsive purchases.
