How to Buy Healthy Foods

It is common for many of us to consume a large amount of unhealthy foods that are prepackaged and processed due to our busy lifestyles. Learning how to buy healthy foods can help to change our diet so that we can decrease our risk of developing many health problems that are associated with eating an unhealthy diet.

  1. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh produce has much more nutritional value than processed fruits and vegetables, such as canned or frozen. By increasing your amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, you can rest assured that you are receiving adequate vitamins and minerals in your diet.

  2. Look for farmers markets in your area. If you find a farmers market, this is where you should purchase your fruits and vegetables from. Farmers markets tend to carry the freshest locally grown produce. Fruits and vegetables lose nutritional value as time goes on, so it is best to eat them as fresh as you can.

  3. Steer away from processed products such as boxed dinners and canned goods. Many of these contain high levels of sodium and sugar that are not good for you. For example, if you want to make something similar to hamburger helper, you could use whole grain noodles, hamburger meat with low-fat content and your own seasonings to make a much more healthy variety.

  4. Choose whole grains over refined grains such as white bread or white rice. Whole grain breads, noodles and rice are much better for your body and are broken down slower by the body than refined grains. You can purchase spaghetti noodles and rice in a brown variety that is much healthier than standard pasta.

  5. Avoid sweets as much as you can. Most sweets are refined grains and sugars. These sweet treats may taste good but are often loaded with unhealthy trans fats that can contribute to clogged arteries and heart disease. Instead, try making your own healthy sweets at home such as fruit salad.
