How to Buy Hiking Footwear

Comfortable hiking footwear can make a big difference while hiking. Whether you are planning on taking a hiking excursion or a quick trek, choosing a well-fitted, comfortable shoe is important. These basic guidelines will help you to make the right choice.

  1. Determine the types of activities that you intend to use your hiking footwear for. If you are planning on hiking for a few hours on a well-groomed trail, choose light hiking footwear. This type of hiking shoe is lightweight, flexible and has limited support. Technical hiking shoes are for hikers who make multiple hiking trips on different types of terrain and carry a heavyweight backpack.

  2. Consider the features when purchasing hiking footwear. Various features are available to enhance comfort. For example, hiking footwear with upper suede offers breathability and flexibility, while a full-grain leather upper is durable and supportive.

  3. Buy hiking footwear that fits comfortably.  For a proper fit, it is recommended that you take a 15-minute walk before fitting hiking shoes. The size and shape of your feet changes after walking compared to when you are rested. Fit the shoes with the same socks that you are planning to wear with the shoes.

  4. Choose at least three different types of hiking footwear to try on. Different brands may accommodate various shapes of feet such as extra wide or slender. Walk around in the store to get a feel of the shoes. Walk on different surfaces or up and down the stairs. Look for telltale signs that may indicate that the shoes are not well fitted.
