How to Buy Pet Insurance
When it's time to buy pet insurance, consider several important factors. The insurer's reputation and coverage of services are worth a close review. You also want to make sure the services your pet will most need are not excluded from a pet insurance policy.
1. Review the coverage terms and prices of several pet insurance companies. You want to get as much coverage as possible for an affordable price.
2. Consider the age of your pet. Some pet insurance companies will charge you more if your pet is older than nine. Some companies will not offer coverage for older pets, so make this the first question you ask a pet insurance company, if you have an older pet.
3. Learn about the hereditary conditions common for your pet. For example, German shepherds and retrievers suffer from hip dysplasia. If you have a pet with commonly acknowledged hereditary and chronic conditions, look for an insurance company that does not exclude hereditary or pre-existing conditions.
4. Evaluate your pet for a tendency to swallow foreign objects. The surgical removal of chew toys, bones and socks can be very costly, providing a greater reason for carrying adequate pet insurance coverage.
5. Ensure the company is registered with the state. Each state has its own regulations. You want to select a company both reputable and registered. Registered companies are regulated, providing greater assurance you won't be subjected to unfair business practices.
6. Read your policy carefully before purchase. You want to make sure you are not paying for a policy that has too many limitations and exclusions, costing you more in pet medical costs.
