How to Buy Tools for a Brake Change

Maintaining a car can prove costly for those not mechanically inclined. An easy way to save yourself some money is to change your own brakes. Changing brakes can be done by anyone armed with a little knowledge and the right tools.

  1. Research the tools needed to change brakes. Search the Internet for tools needed to change brakes or talk to a trustworthy local mechanic about the tools they use to change brakes. There are only a couple of tools that are needed to change brakes; they include: car jack, car stands, sockets, wrenches and a caliper piston tool.

  2. Purchase a car jack and car stands from a local automotive tool retailer. A car jack and stand will eliminate a lot of the time and effort that goes into changing brakes. Make sure that the car jack purchased is sufficient to hold the weight of the car. Once the car is jacked into the air the jack stands are used to safely hold the weight of the vehicle.

  3. Buy sockets and the corresponding wrenches to perform the different tasks associated with changing the brakes. Invest in quality sockets and wrenches so that they will not slip off of the nut or distort the nut when you put pressure on it. Cheaper sockets can even shatter when a lot of force is place on it which can be hazardous.

  4. Invest into buying a caliper piston tool from your local automotive retailer. The caliper piston tool will assist you with properly installing the brake caliper piston back into the brake caliper.
