  1. Look at jacket styles online before you buy your suit. This way you get some idea of the styling options available to you when you shop.

  2. Decide what style of jacket you prefer. You can choose popular jacket types like the two button single-breasted jacket, or select a three or four button jacket instead.

  3. Consider your body type when you shop for your jacket. For example, if you have a thin body, choose double-breasted jackets because it will give you a heavier appearance.

  4. Choose your fabric pattern and color. Most men opt for a solid color jacket, but you can opt for a patterned jacket as well. However, make sure that the patterns at the shoulder and lapel seams are lined up properly.

  5. Determine what the type of fabric you prefer. For summer, consider cotton or linen because they keep you cooler. Wear worsted wool for most seasons and avoid suits that have a high polyester blend. Polyester blends have little breathing capability and often looks cheap.

  6. Select fabrics with minimal wrinkling by crumpling the material to see if it will return to its natural state or wrinkle.

  7. Choose your pants. Options available includes pleated pant, which has a great deal of movement and looks dressy. For a slimming look, consider wearing flat-iron pants. If you want to look heavier, wear cuff leg pants it will give the illusion of shorter legs and more weight and look formal as well.

  8. Check to make sure your jacket fits well. The collar should lie flat in the neck area with at least 1/4 inch of the shirt collar rim exposed. Choose a jacket that has a little bit of padding, but nothing like a football player. Make sure also that the sleeves have anywhere from a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of your shirt cuff showing as well as an allowance of five inches at the tip of your thumb area.

  9. Button your suit up and look in the mirror to see how it looks. Sit and walk around in your suit to see how it feels. It should feel comfortable when you sit and walk without bunching up.

  10. Check how your pants fit on your body. It should lay on your waist and not on your hips and a little above your shoes without exposing your socks when you walk.
