How to Buy a Natural Gas Detector

Commercial and residential properties often use natural gas as fuel for heating a space. While most people never experience a gas leak, this type of accident can create a dangerous situation. Natural gas detectors are designed to immediately sense a gas leak and notify occupants of the emergency.

  1. Determine the type of gas used in the space. Most properties use natural gas as the primary fuel source, but some homes employ propane for heating purposes. A number of natural gas detectors are able to sense multiple gases, including propane, methane, natural gas and radon.

  2. Find out if your utility company places an additive in the natural gas. More utility providers around the country are mixing the gas with a strong smelling substance to reduce the incidence of undetected leaks. If your utility company does not do this, choose a detector with maximum sensitivity.

  3. Decide on your budget. Most gas detectors cost less than $50 and include sensors and an alarm. More expensive models may have multiple alert systems that use light and sounds to notify residents of a potential leak.

  4. Visit a hardware store or home supply retailer to purchase the monitor. Alternately, browse online retailers to find natural gas detectors.

  5. Read the warranty information. You may need to send the receipt or purchase information to the manufacturer for warranty activation. Fill out the registration card as well. This is how the company will notify you in case the natural gas detector has any defects or operation problems.
