How to Choose a Home Theater Audio System

How to Buy an Integrated Home Theater Audio System

Prior to buying an integrated home theater audio system, consumers should educate themselves. Choosing and installing these types of systems can be a huge hassle for most people. Thanks to technology, consumers can now shop for what is commonly referred to as a “home theater in a box.”

  1. Choose which system is best for the area where it is installed. The basic integrated home theater audio system includes all the equipment needed to install surround sound to any TV or video system. More elaborate systems include major additional features, such as built-in DVD and Blu-ray players.

  2. Consider the room where the system is going to go. Keep in mind the placement or mounting of the equipment and the speakers.

  3. Measure any cabinets, shelves or closets where the system is to be installed. Write down the measurements and take them, along with a tape measure, to the store.

  4. Familiarize yourself with the terminology related to integrated home theater audio. For example, some terms used are; Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital, DTS and audio inputs and outputs.

  5. Listen for good sound quality. Bring along a favorite CD or DVD to determine if you like the way it sounds. Ask a store salesperson to adjust the volume dial to its highest setting and listen for any sound distortion.

  6. Purchase any accessories needed to install the audio system, such as speaker mounts, speaker stands, television console, television mounts and cables. If unsure, ask the professionals at the store or hire someone to set it up for you.
