How to Calculate Moving Truck Requirements

Determining the size and type of moving truck to rent can seem tricky at first. Use the recommendations from the truck rental companies as a guide to which size truck you will need. The largest size truck that you can rent with a standard driver’s license is a 24' truck, which is large enough to move a three to four bedroom home.

  1. Count the number of rooms in your home to help determine the size of moving tuck that you will need to fit your belongings. Do not count bathrooms or other small areas that do not have very much stuff in them. Garages and storage spaces should be counted due to the amount of space that is often stored in these spaces.

  2. Count a large room with a lot of furniture as two rooms. The average person does not have that many furniture pieces in their rooms. If you have more than the average amount of stuff in a single room in your home you should count it as two rooms.

  3. Consider cubic footage when determining the size of the truck that you need. For example, a truck that is 16' in length has a storage capacity of 800 cubic feet. The general rule is that you should multiply the number of rooms in your home by 150 to determine the approximate amount of cubic feet that you will need.

  4. Check the guidelines that are offered by the majority of moving truck companies. They will let you know how big of a truck they feel you need based on the size of your home. If you have more stuff than the average person you may want to go up one size just to be safe.
