How to Calculate VA Disability Income
If you were injured while serving your country or when you were active in the military, you may be entitled to VA disability benefits. To determine how much you will receive in benefits each month, you can contact a VA Disability office or visit the Department of Veteran's Affairs website.
- Call your local VA Disability Benefits office. You can get this number from your local job and family service center or from the Social Security office. You can also call the Hotline at 1-800-827-1000. Tell the operator that you would like to know your disability percentage amount. This percentage is determined by how disabled you are. It will be a number zero through 100. Zero means you are not disabled and are not eligible for any VA disability benefits, and 100 means you are severely disabled and eligible for 100 percent benefits.
- Consider whether you are single, married, divorced, widowed or have children. These factors can effect or determine the amount of benefits you get. You can mention this information to the hotline operator so she can figure them into the calculation and give you a more accurate estimate on the total amount.
- Visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website. Click on the Conversion Table tool. Consider your percentage of disability, marital and dependent status to determine how much your monthly VA benefits will be. The amount may change each year, so you should check the Conversion Table often to make sure you are still getting the amount you are entitled to receive.
