How to Calculate Warehouse Storage Space
The uses of warehouse storage are various. Individuals may need the space because their home is too small for all of their belongings. A business may need the area for storage of company related items. The amount of space a person or business affects what can be stored.
You will need a calculator, a pen, a piece of paper and a measuring tape.
- Measure the width of the storage warehouse. You need to make this a precise measurement. If you are unable to do this alone due to the size of the area, you need to recruit someone to help you with this step. Place the end of the measuring tape on one side of the building and pull the tape all the way to the other side.
- Write down you width measurement. There are several numbers involved in this process. You should write down the number you obtained for the width of the building.
- Measure the length of the storage building. This is done just like step one, except you are measuring the longer part of the warehouse. Once again, this needs be an exact measurement.
- Write down your length measurement. This is for reference. This will also keep you from getting the numbers mixed up.
- Measure the height of the warehouse. This is an important measurement if you intend on stacking your storage items.
- Write the height measurement on the paper with the other measurements.
- Multiply the numbers. Most storage warehouses are shaped like a rectangle. You will multiply the width times the length times the height. This will give you your area if there are no other factors to consider.
- Account for the items that could alter space. Things like light fixtures and support poles can take away from the storage space. Calculate the area occupied by these types of things, and subtract it from the total area.
