How to Care for Down Ski Clothing

Properly caring for down ski clothing will help it last for many years. The skier should clean the down clothes on a regular basis to keep the outfit in good condition. Storing the clothes after winter ends is the best way to protect the outfit from unnecessary wear and tear.

  1. Inspect your down ski clothing each time you wear it. Check for small tears that can often occur on the slopes or on a ski lift. If you find a large tear, sew a patch on the clothing if there is not enough material to fold. Make sure to repair any tears before you launder the ski clothing.

  2. Read the care instructions on your down ski clothing to find out how to properly launder the items. If you clean a down ski outfit in the washing machine, make sure to change the setting to gentle. Use cold water in the washer, unless the label indicates otherwise.

  3. Check the ski clothes for stains before you put them through the washer. Use a mild stain remover and do not scrub the down clothing too hard. After the wash cycle ends, make sure that all of the stains are gone.

  4. Hang your down ski clothing after the wash cycle ends instead of putting the items in the dryer. You will prevent your outfit from possibly shrinking by not using the dryer. Shake off the excess water from each item of clothing and then smooth out the wrinkles. Use a large, plastic hanger to hang your ski clothes until they dry.

  5. Put your down ski clothing in a safe place when winter is over. A closet that receives little use is an ideal spot for a ski outfit. You can also bag the items and place them in an attic to keep the clothes in good condition until next winter.
