How to Care for Maple Butcher Block Countertops
Butcher block countertops theoretically allow the cook to eschew the cutting board. However, most experts agree that using smaller block cutting boards helps to preserve the long life of countertops. Maple is prized for these countertops because of its durability and reasonable price point. To keep them beautiful, it’s important to clean them regularly.
Supplies:
- Mineral oil
- Cleaning rags
- Water
- White vinegar
- Dish soap
- Drizzle oil onto the countertop after it is installed. Use a dry rag and rub the oil into the wood. Follow the wood grain; this makes it easier for the maple to absorb the oil. Let the surface dry completely. Repeat this process once or twice a month. It restores the new appearance of the wood and keeps it healthy.
- Make a mixture of two quarts warm water and one tablespoon of dish soap. Use a cleaning rag and get it wet with the soap mixture. Wring it out and wipe down the countertop. Remember to rub with the wood grain to get the best cleaning. Use another clean, damp rag to wipe down the counter a second time so all soap residue is removed.
- Use a clean rag soaked with vinegar to sanitize the counter regularly. This will kill bacteria and remove odors from the maple. Rub across the countertop with the grain and allow the vinegar to air dry thoroughly.
- Remove nicks or scratches by lightly sanding the wood surface. Re-oil the area.
- Do not cut raw meat on the surface of the butcher countertops. Use a separate cutting board designated for meat to prevent contaminating other surfaces.
