How to Care for a Diesel Engine

Some people prefer to drive a vehicle that has a diesel engine rather than a standard gasoline engine because it has a lot more power. Proving the proper maintenance to these engines will prevent you from have any serious problems in the future.

If you are considering purchasing a vehicle with a diesel engine it would be a great choice if you are prepared to provide it with the proper maintenance to keep it operating efficiently. You can increase the performance of the engine by following a few simple steps.

  • Allow the engine to warm up in cold weather for at least 10 minutes before driving. This should be done to increase the oil density of the engine because slow oil circulation can cause pressure to build up in the engine and may lead to serious problems.

  • The oil should be changed in the engine approximately every 3000 miles and use only quality diesel oil. This is something you can easily do yourself or you can take it to automotive shop to have the service performed.

  • Replace the fuel injector, spark plugs and timing belt every 60,000 miles. The timing belt should be replaced sooner if it is showing signs of wear.

  • Check the transmission fluid and brake oil levels on a weekly basis and fill as needed.

  • Replace the air filter every 15,000 miles and clean it between changes.

  • Replace the coolant in the radiator every 40,000 miles.

  • Have the engine checked by an experienced mechanic every 50,000 miles to inspect the engine and its components.
