How to Carry a Golf Bag

Many golfers choose to carry their own golf bag when they play a round of golf. A golf bag is heavy and carrying it for 3 hours or more is a great way to get a workout. There are other options available to carry the clubs during a round, such as a hand cart or hiring a caddy.

  • Buy a comfortable shoulder strap to use for carrying your golf bag. Many bags come with a standard strap that does not have much padding. A heavy bag will cause an inadequate strap to dig into your shoulder, which can affect your golf swing during a round.

  • Switch shoulders often when you carry your own bag. For example, carry the bag on one shoulder after your drive, then switch shoulders to carry the bag to the green. Most bags have a small leather handle at the base, which you can hold with your opposite hand to take some of the weight off of your shoulder.

  • Use a hand cart to carry your golf bag. Many golf courses have hand carts that you can use for free. Place your clubs on the hand cart and fasten them tightly so they do not fall off during a round.

  • Put your clubs in a golf cart to transport them. Carts are not always included in the fee that you pay to play a round of golf, so you should find out the cost before you use one. Place your clubs in the back of the cart and secure them before you head off to the first tee.

  • Hire a caddy to carry your golf bag. While this is the most expensive option, you will still get some extra exercise by walking the golf course instead of riding in a cart. Call and ask the clubhouse manager if the facility has a caddy you can hire before you go to the course.
