How to Cast On Knitting Stitches
An early step in the process of beginning to knit is to form a foundation row. This row consists of stitches on one of your two knitting needles, also known as casting on. If your new to knitting, finding a step process that is simple is best for beginner knitters.
- Measure the length of the yarn off your yarn ball. Allow for at least one inch for each stitch you need in order to cast on. The knitting pattern you choose will provide you with information on the exact number of stitches you'll need in order to properly cast on.
- Next, form a slipknot at the off point of the yarn. Bring the right side of the yarn atop the left side of the yarn to create a loop. Pull another loop through the middle of your first loop, using the tail end of the yarn. Continue pulling the end of the yarn until the slipknot is tight. Slide the slipknot through one needle and pull it to fit tightly. Once you've completed this step you've created your first stitch.
- Take the needle and hold it with the slipknot in your right hand. Place the shorter yarn end over top your left thumb. Position the other end of the yarn from the ball on the right side of your index finger and around. If this step is done correctly, the yarn should cross over the front of your index finger. Lastly, tightly hold each of the yarn ends with your three fingers.
- Place the tip of the slip-knotted needle under the yarn placed on your thumb, going from front to back. Bring the needle with the yarn placed on your thumb on top and underneath the strand of yarn you've placed on your index finger.
- Pull the needle with the yarn through the loop you've created with the yarn on the thumb.
- Next, slip your thumb out of the loop and pull the loose end of the yarn to connect the new stitch to the needle.
- Insert your knitting needle once again and repeat the process for the total number of stitches you'll need to complete your pattern.
