How to Caulk Around Doors and Windows
Caulking is one of the least expensive means of preserving the appearance of door and window frames. In addition to sealing the edges of the frames from water, it also prevents possible airflow from entering the home, costing more dollars to heat and cool. It is a relatively easy task well within the capability of the average homeowner.
Items needed:
- Latex caulk cartridge
- Caulking gun
- Wet rag
- Putty knife
- Work with a clean surface. With a one-inch putty knife, clean any old paint and caulk from the area to be sealed. Take a damp rag and wipe the surface clean. Be sure to let it dry completely before applying the caulk.
- Pull the ribbed rod of the caulking gun all the way out of the cylinder. Make sure the elbowed end of the rod is pointed upward. Place the caulk cartridge into the gun and push the rod firmly against it. Turn the end of the rod downward. Cut off the plastic tip on the cartridge at a 45 degree angle Slip a nail into the plastic end puncture a hole in the tip end of the cartridge.
- Begin at the top of the door or window frame, and place the tip of the caulk against the crack. Squeeze the handle on the gun and allow the caulk to fill the cracks. Move from the top of the crack downward, filling the entire length of the opening. It is better to do it in one swipe if possible. Do not release the caulking gun until you have reached the bottom of the crack.
- Finish caulking around the entire door or window. Take your pointer finger and run it along the length of the caulk to smooth it out. This ensures that it seals properly.
- Place a nail through the plastic tip of the caulking cartridge to prevent it from leaking out. Twist and pull back on the rod and remove the cartridge. Make sure to turn the end of the rod upward to release pressure when removing the cartridge.
