How to Change Brake Pads

Worn brake pads will cause damage to your rotor. If they are not replaced properly, there is a possibility that your brakes will not work at all. This is a potentially dangerous and life threatening situation. To save money, you could replace your brake pads yourself.

How to Change Brake Pads:

Step 1: Disconnect your battery cables. Pull up the parking brake. Place blocks behind the back tires to prevent the car from rolling.

Step 2: Loosen the lug nuts.

Step 3: Jack up the side of the car where you want to change out the brake pad. Remove the lug nuts and the tire.

Step 4: Remove the bolts holding the caliper in place. Pull the caliper away from rotor.

Step 5: Remove the brake pad from the caliper.

Step 6: Install the new brake pads in the caliper. Ensure that the brake pad is secured to the caliper.

Step 7: Reattach the caliper to the rotor. Secure the bolts back into place.

Step 8: Reattach the tire and tighten the lug nuts. Lower this side of your car. Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for each set of brake pads you are replacing.
