How to Change Kitchen Cabinet Refacing
Most cabinets are covered with veneer, wood or plastic over a particleboard, especially if they do not have paint on them. When the surface of the cabinets change or become dull, they can be refaced to make them look good again.
Materials Needed
- Screwdriver
- Putty knife
- Vibrating pad sander
- Cloth
- Tape measure
- Razor blade
- Laminate veneer
- Remove the hinges using a screwdriver. Remove the doors and the hardware as well. Find a well-ventilated area that you can work in. Place the pieces that you want to reface over your work area.
- Use a putty knife to chip away all chipping or peeling paint. Sand over all of the pieces using a vibrating pad sander. You want to create a dull surface that the veneer can adhere to.
- Wipe the pieces with a damp cloth. Make sure you remove all of the particles left from sanding. Allow the surface to completely dry.
- Measure the cabinets with a tape measure. Draw the measurements on the laminate veneer. Make sure you leave 1 inch of space outside of the measurement. Cut the first piece with a razor blade.
- Remove the backing from the veneer and place it over the surface of the cabinet. Apply pressure over the entire surface of the veneer. Trim away the excess veneer. Continue to apply the veneer until the cabinets are completely done.
- Allow the veneer to sit on the cabinets for 24 hours. Reattach the cabinets and place all hardware back into place.
